What Is Holistic Trauma Therapy?
Holistic trauma therapy looks at healing through the lens of the whole person. Here, a person is a complex multifaceted being. This approach views a person as mind, body, and spirit and seeks a non-pathologizing model of care.
Trauma is something we feel, carry in the body, and think about. It is an imprint, showing up as images in the mind, and nervous-system responses in the body.
A holistic approach to treating the wounds of trauma may include trauma-focused talk therapy and can also include:
somatic awareness (body-based noticing)
nervous system regulation
emotional processing at a safe pace
meaning-making and identity work
Some people also find it helpful when therapy includes spiritual language or frameworks, but only if the client feels it is supportive and empowers their recovery process.
Healing is not a line, but a spiral. It is layered, embodied, and deeply individual.
